Dark Elves Core (8th Edition Codex)Since my last post I have begun playing Dark Elves using the 7th Edition codex and have played multiple battles using the new 8th Edition codex. I have decided to write a review of the codex, starting with the Core Units. First thing of note is the three universal special rules that ALL dark elves get. Always Strikes First – This means the Dark Elves will strike first and often get re- rolls to hit which against most enemies means hitting 8. Also eliminates a major advantage once held by the High Elves.

Hatred (High Elves) – Dark Elves no longer have Eternal Hatred but this does ensure that they still get re- rolls against High Elves in the first round of combat. Murderous Prowess – Being seasoned killers, Dark Elves get to re- roll all rolls of 1 To Wound. Not a game changer but definitely pushes the idea of aggressive Dark Elf melee armies. Dreadspears. I’m not sure why they changed the name of these guys but they are your classic Dark Elf Spearmen with a couple special rules and a long- deserved points increase. They now cost 9 points apiece and the full command options now total 3.

They now automatically get shields giving them a total armour save of 5+. Being able to fight in 4 ranks means you can get a lot of re- rolls from Always Strikes First and Murderous Prowess if you take a horde of 4. They will hold their ground if the BSB and General are nearby.

I usually take a big block of 5. Bleakswords. These are Dark Elf Spearmen who have decided to use swords instead of spears. They cost the exact same and have the exact same stat line. Not taking spears mean they lose the ability to fight in 4 ranks as a horde, but gain access to a 6+ parry save in close combat. These means they are slightly more survivable in exchange for being a lot less deadly.
Personally, I would almost never take these guys. Parry saves just don’t do enough to help you win combats which means something else has to save the day. Darkshards. Another unit that has undergone a price increase and a name change, these are your classic Repeater Crossbowmen. For 1. 3 points, you have a Bleaksword armed with a repeater crossbow which still works the same as in the last codex.
Repeater crossbows have a 2. This makes them deadly when you concentrate volleys on lightly armoured troops. This makes the Darkshards an excellent unit for a Dark Elven gunline army, being decent in melee as well as range. I use these guys in my gunline lists and force the enemy to wade through the bolts to get to me. For a more aggressive list, you may want to pass over them. Black Ark Corsairs. These guys got a slight points increase from last edition but they have gotten even better in this edition.
At 1. 1 points a model, you can either give them a second hand weapon or a repeater handbow which adds a Stand and Shoot option for a ranking unit. Personally I would always give them the second hand weapon to make them into a tough assault unit. With their Sea Dragon cloaks, they are the only Dark Elf infantry with a 4+ armour save and with their twin weapons they will have 2 attacks per model. The models don’t rank up well, but a horde of these guys would be a scary sight on the battlefield.
Dark Riders. The infamous Dark Riders were a great Fast Cavalry unit in the last codex and have improved with the new codex. They have gotten significantly cheaper and now have an option for shields without losing the Fast Cavalry rule. This means they are one of the only fast cavalry units with a 4+ save and still be under 2.
I typically field 3 units of 5 Dark Riders with shields, sometimes with repeater crossbows to bring them up to exactly 2. A unit that I would include with any army list whether aggressive or defensive, gunline or combined arms. Witch Elves. These girls have finally moved from Special to Core with a point increase. They wear bikinis (no armour save but very distracting) and wield 2 poisoned blades for 1.
They are also frenzied, giving them 3 attacks per model and can get massive boosts with the aid of a Cauldron of Blood or some characters. However, beware who you put in the units because some of these Brides of Khaine go insane at the end of the turn and might kill non- Khainite characters. Personally, I will never take more than 1. They are just too easy to kill without relying on a Cauldron of Blood to give them a 4th attack and a 5+ ward which is just asking for cannons to focus fire on these girls.
